Bowland Retreats

We take a closer look at Bowland Retreat Lodges – a family-run collection of self-catered lodges that blends contemporary elegance with the tranquility of the Lancashire countryside.

The guiding vision behind Bowland Retreat is simple - to create an experience where quality, comfort, and connection take precedence over the ordinary. Every lodge is crafted with intention, ensuring open-plan living, fully equipped kitchens, private decking, and secluded hot tubs, all framed by the stunning landscapes of the Ribble Valley and the Forest of Bowland.

We spoke with the Bowland team, the small family behind this unique destination, who shared how each lodge is positioned to maximise privacy while making the most of the surrounding countryside.

What first inspired you to take such an active role in designing the lodges yourselves?

From the very beginning, this has been a family venture - just myself, my wife and our daughter and we all love the design process from structural to interiors - so being hands-on felt completely natural. We didn’t want the lodges to feel generic or “off the shelf.”  It was important to us that when guests arrive, they instantly sense that care, intention and individuality. Designing the lodges ourselves allowed us to create something authentic - spaces that reflect both our standards and our story as a family business.

Do you design around specific pieces, or the feeling you want the space to have?

We always start with the feeling. Each lodge is designed to feel calm, luxurious, and like a true escape, and that atmosphere guides a lot of the decisions.

Often the design begins with colour - perhaps a feature wall or bold kitchen units that set the tone. Other times it’s a statement tile that inspires a whole mood board. From these starting points, textures, finishes, and lighting naturally come together to create a cohesive, welcoming retreat.

"We were drawn to Lusso for their high-end, luxurious look and impeccable attention to detail."

Andrew, Owner

How did you approach the design process – were there any principles or starting points you always came back to?

Our guiding principle was always the guest experience - how we want people to feel the moment they walk through the door. We aimed to balance luxury with comfort and practicality!

Much of the designing happened around our kitchen table, debating taps, handles, and pendant lights. Being a small family team means every detail is considered, making each lodge feel thoughtful, and truly personal.

What was it that attracted you to Lusso products?

We were drawn to Lusso for their high-end, luxurious look and impeccable attention to detail. Their products perfectly complement the style and feel of our lodges, helping us create spaces that feel indulgent yet relaxing. For our guests - couples looking for a restorative break - Lusso adds that extra touch of sophistication, turning a stay into a real treat.

What would you say is your favourite Lusso product within the lodges?

It’s hard to pick just one, but our favourite has to be the Marconi Freestanding Bath featured in our Juniper lodge - a real wow piece. Many of our guests are couples seeking a romantic weekend away or celebrating a special occasion, and this luxurious bath, alongside the dual basins, sets the perfect tone. Aspects like this, means guests go away and chat with friends and family!
