How To Clean & Maintain Cast Iron

Your cast iron bath should last a lifetime given the correct aftercare is provided. Your traditional bath will be coated with vitreous enamel - which has many of the same qualities as glass - including its tough structure that’s easy to clean. Below we advise you how to clean and care for your traditional cast iron bath. Below we outline how to clean your bath and how to protect your investment and keep it looking its best.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

  • Non-abrasive cleaner or soap.
  • Soft sponge or microfibre cloth.
  • Soft towel.
  1. Set your cast iron tub to a hot temperature before cleaning, as this makes it easier to clean. Do this by filling your bath with 3-4 inches of hot water and rotating it around the inside of the bath. Leave this for several minutes and then drain the water.
  2. Use two tablespoons of cast iron non-abrasive cleaner and mix it with one gallon of hot water.
  3. Gently rub the surface with a hot sponge or microfibre cloth.
  4. Rinse out the cast iron bath with hot water to make sure no residue of the cleaner is left behind.
  5. Dry your cast iron bath using a soft microfibre cloth or towel.

It is best to quickly clean and dry the cast iron bath down after bathing. Tackling soap build-up with a damp cloth while the bath is still warm stops soap-ring becoming a problem. Drying the bath after use will improve the chances of it staying mould and mildew free in the long term. A dripping tap will cause discoloration of your bath and a build-up of limescale so it’s important to always make sure there is no water coming out of the taps when the bath is not in use.
