Door Latches & Hinges: A Complete Buying Guide

Door latches complete your door handle and allow it to function. Our designs consist of tubular latches and latches with door locks that work seamlessly with our internal door handles. Crafted from brass and stainless steel, and coated in one of our signature finishes of brushed gold, polished nickel, aged bronze, distressed steel, matte black and brushed stainless. Read our guide below to discover which door latch is best for your door furniture.

WHAT IS A TUBULAR LATCH?

A tubular latch is installed into a door, and is designed to allow a door to open and close by a door handle or knob. Tubular latches are often fitted into internal doors that don’t require a lock such as a dining room, lounge or kitchen. The backplate of a tubular door latch is the plate you see on the edge of the door. The strike plate is opposite it in the door frame - the closing mechanism from the latch sits inside the hole in the middle of the strike plate. The strike plate also prevents the door frame from being scuffed or worn as the door is opened and closed.

WHAT IS A THUMBTURN LATCH?

Thumbturn locks, often referred to as a bathroom door lock, provides privacy and security to a space such as a bedroom or bathroom. It features a mechanism that allows you to open it from the outside as well as lock from the inside. To close a door, turn the thumbturn clockwise and a latch should be released into the door cavity. To open doors, turn the thumbturn anticlockwise and the latch will retract.

ARE THUMBTURN LATCHES SAFE?

Thumbturn locks offer a small level of security. Unlike other locks, thumbturn locks can open from the outside as these often feature an emergency release slot on the outside of the door. This emergency release slot can unlock the door in emergency situations. Door locks are also helpful due to their quick release lock. If you find yourself in an emergency situation, such as a fire, and are inside of a locked room, it will be easier and quicker to turn a thumbturn lock than to find a key to unlock the door. Choose from singular tubular latches to pair with your Lusso door handle or knob, or opt for a complete WC thumbturn set with latch.
