How to add statement wallpaper to the bathroom

One of our favourite things is seeing how our customers have styled their Lusso products in the bathroom. Thanks to the minimalist design, our stone baths, basins, shower and vanity units work perfectly with a myriad of styles. From the effortlessly cool industrial decor trend to beautifully bright botanicals, we’re yet to see a trend that our stone bathroom products don’t suit.

If you’re looking to add some serious style to your space, one of the easiest ways to upgrade your bathroom is through statement wallpaper. In this blog, we’re going to look at how to wallpaper the bathroom and which trends you should incorporate into your home this year. Be warned, we’re going bold!

Can you use wallpaper in the bathroom?

Yes! You will always find people who say that you shouldn’t use wallpaper in the bathroom, but as long as your space is well ventilated with a window and an extractor fan, you’re good to go. Wallpaper has evolved over the years so you can easily find washable styles that are suited to humid areas such as bathrooms and kitchens. We just advise keeping the wallpaper away from direct water contact, a statement wall that’s away from the shower or basin area is ideal for wallpaper decor.

What type of wallpaper do I need for the bathroom?

Look for wallpaper that is vinyl coated as these are ideal for rooms where moisture is in the air. You can also use wallpaper that is specifically labelled as ‘wash resistant’ or ‘extra washable’. If you do find a wallpaper style that you want in the bathroom but it isn’t suited to humid areas, we recommend investing in varnish. SImply add 2-3 coats of varnish once the paper is up, always do a test first though – you don’t want to end up damaging the wallpaper.

Now for the fun part!

  1. Measure the wall that you want to add paper to and calculate how many rolls you will need.
  2. Ensure your area is free from any direct water contact.
  3. Hang the paper carefully, taking care to ensure that all air bubbles are removed from the surface as you go.
  4. Take a squeegee and run it over the wallpaper once it is up, this will help remove any imperfections and ensure it won’t peel off over time.
  5. Ensure the room is well ventilated and let the wallpaper fully dry.
  6. Once dry, coat the paper with strong varnish to give it extra protection.

How to add a statement wall in a bathroom

Papering the whole bathroom can end up overwhelming the space, and if you have a compact bathroom you will end up feeling very closed in! We recommend choosing one wall in the bathroom as a feature wall, this gives you enough creative space to add a print or pattern that can be balanced against neutral paint or tiles. Another benefit to adding a feature wall is the ability to target the wall furthest away from baths, basins or showers, reducing the amount of water on the paper itself!

One of our favourite bathroom wallpaper trends is botanicals. This bold and bright pattern looks like it was made for the bathroom, with nature-inspired colours and prints that will transform your space into a tropical haven. Lush greenery is perfect for any size bathroom and the addition of pops of colour will contrast perfectly with a sleek white bathroom set. Thinks flamingos, pineapples, toucans and tropical flowers, paired with our rose gold bathroom accessories, the bolder the better!

If you have a traditional bathroom, you can still incorporate a statement wall into your bathroom decor. Create a classic British heritage feel with floral wallpaper in soft tones, if you have wooden panels in your bathroom you can paint these to complement the shades in the wallpaper for a beautifully cohesive theme. If you are looking to create a heritage feel bathroom, we recommend our beautiful gunmetal and matte black bathroom accessories. These statement pieces bring in that quintessential British style that works perfectly with white bathroom suites.
