What is solid surface material made of?

One of the most common questions we get from our customers is what our stone bathroom products are actually made from. We’re extremely proud of the quality of our solid surface stone and if you’re looking to add quality stone baths, basins, vanity units or more to your home, here’s what you need to know.

What is stone resin?

Solid surface, also known as stone resin, is a solid and non-porous material usually composed of a combination of acrylic resin, bauxite, epoxy, marble dust and pigments.

Lusso Stone solid surface material is composed of 40% pure acrylic resin (MMA), 55% natural mineral (ATH: Alumina Trihydrate) and 5% colour pigment.

Solid surface is used to mimic the appearance of naturally occurring materials such as granite, marble and stone and can be joined almost invisibly by a trained craftsman. This solid surface can then be cast into a variety of shapes, including our signature bathtubs, basins and shower panels.

Why should I use solid surface in the bathroom?

As solid surface can be cast into almost any shape, there are endless possibilities for designers, architects and homeowners to create exactly what they want. Stone surface is incredibly durable, repairable and renewable so it’s easy to fix if the material becomes scratched or damaged. We’ve even put together a handy how to care for your stone bath guide to help you keep your bath or basin looking brand new.

As solid surface is a non-porous material, it actually prevents the build-up of bacteria in the bathroom. Our solid surface stone basins can also be joined to the countertop surface without any gaps, eliminating areas for water to pool and bacteria to grow.

Once buffed and polished, stone surface is perfectly smooth, offer a luxurious surface that is pleasant to the touch and great to look at. It’s also incredibly impact resistant, water resistant, stain resistant AND chemical resistant to most household staining agents and chemicals.

Finally, for those concerned about their eco-footprint, solid surface is an inert and non-toxic material that under normal circumstances does not emit gases. When solid surface is burned, it releases primarily carbon oxides and any smoke generated does not contain toxic gases.
